Escape to the Blue Island
Do you remember our escape to the blue island?
I built sand castles around us on the tropic shores,
walls that hid our sweating bodies,
the bare bones and fever wrapped in skin,
succumbing to rapture, birds parroted our ecstasy
and snakes went mad and monkeys screamed.
Night fell I left your slumbering side
and collapsed on the moonlit beach;
plunging my fists into the silver sand
unearthing shells still pink with pearl
and fish of stars hardened by sun…
Finally releasing the baby from my womb,
I buried her in the sand,
covering her face before she woke,
I left her to be swallowed by the sea
or slowly chewed away by insects…
Morning came, you rose alone with the sun
and scoured the island for me.
I heard you crying my name
as I shuddered in my shallow grave,
but I was lost before we ever touched
and these pieces of me are now left to rot
in the sand on a dead blue island.
